Scratchy Bottom
The wonderfully named Scratchy Bottom is a cliff-top valley in the Purbecks and was used for some of the scenes in the 1967 film Far from the Madding Crowd. We walked through the valley on our way to Durdle Door and just couldn't resist taking a photo of this milestone as it really made us chuckle (childish as we are!) We've been pondering ever since how it may have got its name.....

ReplyDeleteI've heard of Pratt's Bottom, which is local to us and makes us laugh, but Scratchy Bottom is even better!

ReplyDeleteI'm sure I will!
ReplyDelete"Bottom" is an old geographic name for a valley, particularly the lowest point of the valley. There are several around England and 2 others I know of in Dorset - Canford Bottom (now a massive road junction) and Happy Bottom in Corfe Mullen see image at: http://www.pbase.com/gareth_m_jones/image/153238845
ReplyDeleteWell, what a lovely find! I shall read this in depth. I have passed the Saxon Church in Wareham so many times and have taken it for granted. I hope it is open when we go!
